Director of Secondary School Placement

 Starting Fall 2019

The Bement School, founded in 1925, is a coeducational day and boarding school in Deerfield, Massachusetts serving students in kindergarten through grade nine. Guided by an exceptional faculty, Bement students engage in a rigorous and joyful academic program balancing achievement across the academic, athletic, artistic, and leadership realms.

The Bement School possesses a strong global reputation as an excellent junior boarding school with an exceptional record of secondary school placements. Students come to Bement seeking a strong academic and cultural preparation for secondary school. Our students are excited to face new challenges, happy to collaborate with their peers, and committed to an open community based on kindness and connection with their peers and teachers.

The director of secondary school placement is responsible for the design and implementation of the secondary school placement process. The director will teach a half-time load of classes in the upper school (or an equivalent duty in another aspect of school life), serve as a ninth grade advisor, and will work directly with families in supporting the secondary school application process. The director is classified as a faculty member and will report to the head of the upper school. The director will also collaborate regularly and closely with the head of school.

In addition to core teaching responsibilities, the director will:

  • Be familiar with the schools and application process for all secondary schools to which Bement students are applying
  • Schedule and host secondary school admission officer visitors to campus
  • Plan and host informational workshops for families in preparation for the secondary school search process
  • Provide close support to families in developing an appropriate list of schools to visit and in determining a final application list that is appropriate to each individual student
  • Review and provide feedback to families on student essays and parent statements
  • Communicate regularly with families to relieve anxiety and provide timely information, before and after the application deadline and admission decisions are received
  • Ensure the timely and seamless receipt of faculty recommendations
  • In collaboration with the head of school, write recommendation letters for students
  • Ensure that all application materials are submitted to secondary schools ahead of deadline and confirm receipt
  • Provide feedback to the Bement faculty and administration on placement results and pertinent opportunities to enhance our curriculum and pedagogy
  • Assist as necessary in the admission process for new students and represent the school as requested

While the director of placement position is classified as a 10-month faculty position it is understood that from time to time the director will need to be engaged with families or representing the school on weekends, school breaks, or during the summer months.

The ideal candidate would possess many of the following qualities:

  • Experience as a student or faculty member in an independent/boarding school
  • Knowledge of the independent secondary school landscape, particularly as it pertains to the admission requirements and process
  • Experience as a teacher, coach, advisor, or another similar role working with middle or high school students
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; experience and confidence in presenting to audiences
  • Experience working with international students and families
  • Willingness to fully engage in the life of a boarding school community
  • A master’s degree

The Bement School offers a competitive compensation and benefits program for faculty members.  School housing may be available.
