Summer, 2009
Dear Students and Parents,
For so many students, it's hard to find enough time to read during the
school terms. The irony of our education system is that despite our best
intentions, we all end up with so many demands on our time that reading
doesn't get top priority. Now, especially with the Internet taking more
and more time and space, it's important to find a change of pace and
immerse oneself in the world of books. Please help your child/young
adult find ways to do that this summer. Look for books on tape for car
rides. Find time to read.
We continue to ask all upper school students to read a minimum of two
books. Please see the specific section of this letter which addresses
each class level's required book(s). Students should arrive at school in
September with two things:
1. Written responses to the required book for their grade (Please type
or write in ink.)
2. INDEX CARD containing information about the free choice book-
enticing others to read it. Please be sure to write title, author, and
some salient details- and include your name!
|
* FOR SIXTH GRADE: Choose one book from this list. Then pick one other
book to read, either from the attached list or a book you choose. Please
find a copy in a library or a bookstore.
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park
The Giver by Lois Lowry
The Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O'Dell
For writing: Each of the main characters in the book experiences
personal discovery through his or her own difficult journey. Please come
to school with a one (1) page paper written about the character in the
book you chose describing his or her journey and what he or she learned
from that journey.
* FOR SEVENTH GRADE: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and a book from
the attached list or one that you discover on your own.
For writing: Choose one conflict in the story and write about why that
conflict is so difficult for each character involved. Conflicts can be
man v. man (or woman), man v. self, man v. nature, man v. ideas. Be sure
to include one quotation that shows the depth of the conflict, and
discuss that quotation in your own words. One page typed.
* FOR EIGHTH GRADE: Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees and
New Boy by Julian Houston. Please respond to the following
questions:
1. What similarities do the protagonists of the two novels share?
2. What moral dilemmas do the protagonists face/experience? Choose one
of the issues and discuss how you would respond to the same situation.
* FOR NINTH GRADE: Please choose a memoir from the list below. Search
the internet for reviews or go to a bookstore and check out the books.
Please write 1-2 pages about a passage or event in your memoir that
epitomizes the narrator's strength of character. Your other book may be
a choice from our list of suggestions or a book of your own choice.

sources of your own: bookstores, websites such as www.powells.com, or
Amazon.com. For information on award-winning young adult literature,
visit the American Library Association's website on literary awards.
We hope you all find time to read this summer. Read aloud as a family.
Listen to books on tape as you travel. There are many ways to encourage
love of literature. We'll look forward to hearing about your
explorations when we meet in September.
Sincerely,
