Bienvenidos to Bement’s visit to La Republica Dominicana! Come explore this year’s all-school mini-term adventure in learning and see how we set out on a course of our own to travel this region. We made our connection to the Dominican through experiencing its traditional music, dance, food, language, and customs. We studied its geography, climate, resources, and much of its history, language, government, arts, food, types of transportation, traditional/common jobs (ways people support their family), and interests. With each step, we took many opportunities to pair lower and upper school students to join together in their learning experiences. We hope we have helped to encourage a wonderful appreciation for the country, its history, its beauty, and its vibrant, friendly culture.
To help build our students’ true connections to this culture, each student was also involved in making a hand-made gift for the children in La Suiza orphanage. These gifts will go to the orphanage with this year's ninth grade class trip in January 2010.
Overall, our hope was to bring every student at Bement a sense of cultural understanding, compassion, and as a community, a greater sense of our responsibility in a larger world.
